The WaterCube concept was originally developed for the "Man on the Moon" competition, an internal global Danfoss competition made to stimulate new ideas and concepts for the future.  The WaterCube concept won the first prize in the Business Plan section of the competition in 2005.

Since 2005 the product development has taken place within Danfoss. Like any other Danfoss product, the WaterCube2 is produced on a solid basis of years of product development and extensive testing in different environments all around the world. This approach ensures a high level of reliability and durability of the components used in the water purifier. From 2010, the production and sales is carried out by AqSep, a company "trusted by Danfoss", indicating a strong connection and continued cooperation between the two companies.
